I’ve had some conversations recently that have me thinking about what it means to be consistent in our lives and, more specifically, in our self-tending, self-care and self-devotion practices. I think that we sometimes forget that the practice itself is not the end - it is simply a means by which we exercise our intention to tend ourselves more lovingly, our goal to care for ourselves more fully, our desire to create meaningful shift within ourselves that naturally ripples out into the world. Getting on the mat or the meditation cushion, walking in the woods, creating beauty and joy - these are the things we do to keep our hearts and toes pointed in the direction of self-devotion. This line of pondering brought me to something that a teacher of mine, Valerie Louis, once shared in a workshop. In this gathering, she challenged us to consider what regularity of practice might look like if we removed the expectation that it occur at even intervals of time. What if we allowed that regularity of practice could include anything that we return to? I talk more about this is the video musing below: I learn so much from all of you. Interestingly, these conversations and this line of pondering reminded of the remarkable uniqueness of every single person's path and purpose. In practical terms, I realized that I had inadvertently created an obstacle for some of you in accessing the practices, teachings and offerings that I guide throughout the month - specifically, some of you need to be able to drop-in; the upfront, longer-term commitment simply does not work with the pace and rhythm of your life or the capacity in your nervous system. At the core of my teaching is that you are your own most qualified guide; I am simply along for support, encouragement, and to hold the flame of your self-belief when you feel challenged to hold it for yourself. I excel at partnering with you to create the fertile ground for sustainable, life-affirming shift to take root and flourish. I also know - deep in my bones and alive in my heart - that any amount of devotional practice serves us better than no amount of devotional practice. The path of liberation (moksha in Sanskrit; central to the path of yoga) is lined with the stepping stones of devotion; it will always lead you home, it does not matter how quickly you walk, it matters that you walk. Your wisdom will guide you to the frequency of practice that will move you along your unique path in alignment with your intentions, your capacity and your specific purpose in life - I trust this is true with my full being. So I've eliminated the barrier of commitment to access most of my virtual offerings and I've added some in-person offerings through these lovely, aligned local host studios. Reply to this email and let's get you scheduled. The path of devotion is a winding path for most of us. When we release the demand of consistency of practice confined by regularity of time - daily, weekly, monthly, etc - we free ourselves to navigate the path as it unfolds before us without the shame of "should have" and the fear of "I'm not doing it right". You cannot fail at being you. Devotion, in whatever frequency it occurs, will lead you home. Sending you Love, Tawnia What else I'm up to:🧘♀️ Join me for in-person yoga classes and events: I am heeding the call to get back in the studio to guide classes in-person and am thrilled to be collaborating with local studios and friends to make this a reality.
