Aligned Action: a spiritually practical way of consciously creating your life - starting now

psst - enrollment for Return to You: a women's wisdom circle for self-discovery & love is open 🤩 🤩 🤩

GET ALL THE DETAILS HERE. The circle opens on Oct 1st.

I sense that my last email might have left you wondering “yeah, but then what?” - because we bone-deep know that being in closer relationship with ourselves is only as powerful as where it ultimately carries us.
(ICYMI: I closed my last letter to you with this thought - “Consciously cultivating an intimate connection with your innate sense of inner peace and calling forward your inner stillness is the very practical (and very spiritual) response to outer chaos.”; you can read the whole letter here)

That leads us to what I’d like to explore together today … aligned action.

Because we don’t take the time to practice cultivating an inner posture of peace and stillness simply for the sake of experiencing peace and stillness (though that is a pretty sweet outcome); we create the conditions for inner stillness as a foundation from which we are in so close a relationship with ourselves and our inner guidance system that our - because it will be different for everyone - most aligned action (or lack of action) is clear to us.

More simply stated - settling into ourselves helps us identify the first, next or best step on our life journey. We connect with ourselves; we choose an aligned action; we reconnect; we choose the next aligned action; and so on.

When we skip the step of connecting with ourselves, it leads us into ways of moving and investing our energy that do not support our intentions, our goals or how we wish to show-up in the world. We might find ourselves …

agitating - expending a lot of energy but not truly moving (I sense this state like a top-loading washing machine with no clothes in it to wash - lots of movement; plenty of action but with no practical purpose)

feeling stuck and stagnant - not necessarily expending physical energy but still going nowhere (I sense this one as being on the inner merry-go-round of thoughts and emotions; there’s a sense of circling without end or purpose - I can admit that I have been a frequent traveller in this dizzying state in my lifetime; it’s a pattern that I still have to disrupt by doubling down on inner connection & stillness)

moving to the beat of someone else’s drum - investing our precious life-force energy in the direction of what someone else decides we should be doing (this one is tricky because it’s largely how we’ve been raised to operate in Western culture; at its best, this moves us when we don’t feel like we can move ourselves; at its worst, this moves us far outside of ourselves and away from integrity with our inner guidance system - either way we risk waking up from the dream and wondering how the hell we got here)

You’re probably reading this and thinking - “yeah, I’ve done that” - to each of these ways of moving in the world (I know I have 🙋‍♀️ - if these states stamped passports, mine would be full many times over).

That’s not a problem.

But if you are interested in moving through the world in a more mindful, intentional, conscious - awake - way, the practice is to recognize these energy-draining states and disrupt them when you do so you are free to make choices that lead to action in your life that is in greater alignment with what you truly want to experience - in the day-to-day and in the larger vision.

For example, if you want to experience more peace and have a pattern of getting sucked into your BFF’s drama, your practice is noticing when you are being pulled in and pause to recenter so you can stay more in your body and in connection with your preference for peace. That might mean taking 5 deep breaths before you answer her text messages or repeating a mantra of “I choose peace.” gently to yourself each time you feel yourself being pulled in.

A great journalling prompt to explore a scenario like this is “How can I preserve my peace in this situation/relationship?” You don’t have to ditch the bestie; you simply have to practice shifting the investment of your energy on your own behalf (b/c many of us effortlessly invest it on behalf of others without even realizing it).

Or if you want to experience more self-love and self-investment and have a pattern of saying “yes!” to every request for your time and energy and regretting it later, your practice is pausing before you respond to check in with yourself beyond and beneath the knee-jerk reaction to be nice and please everyone else (wouldn’t want to disappoint anyone). That might look like taking 5 deep breaths before responding or reframing every request as an invitation to invest in something with or for someone else or repeating a mantra of “I am free to decline any invitation.” or “I accept only the invitations that ((insert your parameter here - align with my intention to love myself; lift my heart; bring a smile to my face; leave time for my replenishment, etc)).”

Some journalling prompts to consider to explore this a little further are “How do I love myself by saying “no”?”; “When I say “yes” to someone else and “no” to myself, I feel …”; “I feel nourished when I …”. Again, you don’t have to say no to every request; you are simply practicing noticing when you are saying “yes” out of obligation or habit vs. out of a genuine desire to participate (imagine how freeing it is for all involved when everyone shows up b/c they truly want to, not b/c they feel like they have to).

As you may have noticed in these examples, “aligned action” is not a fixed thing - it is as ever-evolving as we are; what is aligned today may not be at some future point and what is not in alignment right now may come into alignment very soon.

And again, that’s not a problem.

Part of walking our life paths in a more conscious, awake and aware way involves allowing ourselves and everyone around us to change and evolve. One of the greatest gifts we give ourselves on the spiritual journey of life is to honor that all things - including our intentions, our understanding, our way of seeing things, etc - have a season; everything in this world

arises - it comes to being; is born; is created

abides - it is; it exists; it lives

dissolves - it was; it falls away; it dies

Forcing ourselves, others or anything in our lives to remain constant, to only grow or remain unchanged in any way is an act of harm and is to attempt to operate outside the very natural flow of nature and life itself.

When you find yourself stuck in a pattern of inaction rooted in the idea that perfect action is the only acceptable or best action - this can look like telling yourself repeatedly “I don’t know what to do!” - or repeating the same tired patterns of action even though you know where they lead and it’s no longer where you wish to go, give this practice try - connect with yourself; choose the next aligned action you wish to take; pause to reconnect with yourself; choose another aligned action; and so on.

It’s simple; it’s not easy; but it is a spiritually practical way of consciously creating a life that aligns with you.

Sending you Love,

Tawnia
